The funk of forty thousand years is washed off, and we zombies rise… to dance! Thrill the World Portland takes the stage for its tenth annual Thriller dance, the local outpost of a simultaneous, worldwide Thriller.

Join us! We dance at three pm, Irving Park’s covered basketball court, close to 7th & NE Fremont. We ask that dancers arrive by 2:45 pm – we need to get you registered before you can take the court.

We ask a five-dollar donation from all dancers. This helps keep our team motivated to come back year after year to bring you Thriller. Our proceeds this year go to the Sankofa Collective (formerly the Black chapter of Parents & Friends of Lesbians and Gays), and SMYRC, Portland’s Sexual Minority Youth Resource Center.

Practices are happening all month long! For more info, message us at ttwpdx@gmail.com. If you want to learn Thriller at home, look for instructional videos on youtube under username INESSENS.

Costumes optional, Thrillers. All ages and all abilities are welcome. The Irving Park location is ideal for photography and videography, as spectators can stand a couple of feet higher than the dancers.

Plus! Special guest performances! more information to come…

Thrill the World Portland 2016 is a benefit for SMYRC & Sankofa Collective.

We have been a benefit event supporting SMYRC, Portland’s Sexual Minority Youth Resource Center, for the last nine years. This year, we are splitting our proceeds between SMYRC and the Sankofa Collective, which until recently was the Black Chapter of Portland’s PFLAG, Parents and Friends of Lesbians and Gays.

We ask five dollars per dancer, to be collected at our official event. Larger donations are always welcomed, of course. Our instructors and organizers arrange and teach this dance out of love, not least out of the organizations who receive our donations and the people those organizations serve.

For more information on SMYRC, visit their webpage. To read up on Sankofa, this article in PQ Monthly gives some history.

Thriller flash mob at Portland State, Oct 15th

Hi Thrill the World Portlanders,

There is a fun and exciting opportunity to participate in a Thriller flash mob at the Portland State Vikings Homecoming Game vs. Cal Poly at Providence Park on Saturday, October 15th at 2:30pm (we would perform at half-time show).  This dance event aims to bring both the PSU and Portland community together from PSU students/staff/faculty to the general public in the spirit of education and the City of Portland.  The Athletics department intends to donate tickets to the first several zombies who sign up to perform and participate; it is $10 for a ticket to enter for anyone else who performs the dance.

Please email me at kahayes@pdx.edu if you have any questions, and sign up for the dance here.

Please tell people you know and forwarding this form will help get the word out! REHEARSALS will take place for PSU students/faculty/staff at the PSU Campus Recreation Center on-campus: Thursdays, October 6th, and October 13th : 6:15pm-7:45pm ; Saturdays, October 1st and October 8th : 1:15pm-2:45pm; Friday, October 14th: 2:15pm-3:45pm. For the general public, I recommend joining a Thrill the World rehearsal, which you can find here:https://www.facebook.com/thrilltheworldpdx/
