Two practices remaining!

Thrill the World is just a few days away – but there’s time enough to learn the dance… or polish your moves!

We have two practices this week:
The first is in Beaverton on Monday 10/23, 6:30-8:30, in the common area right inside the front doors at Five Oaks Middle School; and then on Friday night, 6-8 pm, at Fremont UMC, 2620 NE Fremont, Portland.

You can also practice at home – instructional videos are on youtube: https://www.youtube.com/user/INESSENS

We dance on Saturday, October 28th
at 3 pm, at Irving Park’s covered basketball court, NE 7th & Fremont.

Please arrive early, as we need to have you register before we dance. DJ Prashant’s Bollywood Thrillers will also be performing at 2:45 – you do not want to miss this!

We also encourage dancers to arrive at the court by travelling through the park, shambling zombie-style as you descend the leaf-strewn hill down to the court, so we can photo/film the horde emerging…

Here’s our facebook event page.

We will also be accepting donations – we request five dollars per dancer; proceeds go to KBOO Community Radio, and Portland Tenants United.

Thanks to everyone participating, and to all our volunteers…. We will see you this week!

The funk of forty thousand years is washed off, and we zombies rise… to dance! Thrill the World Portland takes the stage for its tenth annual Thriller dance, the local outpost of a simultaneous, worldwide Thriller.

Join us! We dance at three pm, Irving Park’s covered basketball court, close to 7th & NE Fremont. We ask that dancers arrive by 2:45 pm – we need to get you registered before you can take the court.

We ask a five-dollar donation from all dancers. This helps keep our team motivated to come back year after year to bring you Thriller. Our proceeds this year go to the Sankofa Collective (formerly the Black chapter of Parents & Friends of Lesbians and Gays), and SMYRC, Portland’s Sexual Minority Youth Resource Center.

Practices are happening all month long! For more info, message us at ttwpdx@gmail.com. If you want to learn Thriller at home, look for instructional videos on youtube under username INESSENS.

Costumes optional, Thrillers. All ages and all abilities are welcome. The Irving Park location is ideal for photography and videography, as spectators can stand a couple of feet higher than the dancers.

Plus! Special guest performances! more information to come…

Dancing Zombies Take Over the World; Portland Hosts 10th Annual Thriller dance & fundraiser

It is a Saturday in late fall – Portlanders are smearing on makeup in ghoulish styles, ripping their clothes, and smudging themselves with dirt. Once it’s obvious they’ve recently risen from the grave, they converge on a covered court at Irving Park in Northeast Portland and drop to the asphalt. At precisely three pm, music ascends from speakers, and together, the zombie-dancers rise and break into a tightly choreographed dance…

This scene will emerge on October 29th, 2016, as Thrill the World, a worldwide project that coordinates local dancers to perform the zombie-dance from Michael Jackson’s Thriller video, for the tenth year in a row.

Proceeds from Thrill the World Portland benefit the Sexual Minority Youth Resource Center (SMYRC), a local organization that provides services and a drop-in center for queer youth, as well as Sankofa Collective, serving the needs of local queer and trans Black and African people.

Dancers will need to learn the dance ahead of time. Practices are held throughout the month of October, at a number of locations in Portland. Our team of five instructors each have years of experience teaching the full Thriller dance in public settings.

In our first nine years, Thrill the World Portland has had more than 1200 participants, and we’ve raised over four thousand dollars for local organizations serving queer and trans people.

For more information on SMYRC, visit their webpage. To learn more about Sankofa, this article in PQ Monthly gives some history.

Gratefully,

Alan Silver, Thrill the World Portland organizer
